techie17 Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 Im just setting up and testing lightspeed filter on an ipad and in the process of configuring the MDM setting to push to the push. Can i push the same settings to all devices or do i have to configure different settings for each devices? I noticed from the Lightspeed instructions that it asks for the UDID so is that for the iPad itself? Also for the username, would that be for the user that that has the device? Maybe there is a better way to get them working and filtering that im not aware of like a portal that users log into on the iOS device?
2ilent8cho Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 This is what I use for our LightSpeed iPad Configuration. In our MDM (JAMF Pro) we set the owner of each iPad which is the field $EMAIL and thats is what LightSpeed then uses as the Username.

I just need to find out what the Meraki variables are now. Do you get users to log into your ipads or do you have an account for each iPad setup?

Do you get users to log into your ipads or do you have an account for each iPad setup? We are a 1:1 deployment, so no logging in to the iPads. The Lightspeed app with those configurations allows for silent authentication so they don't have to sign in to get internet access via LightSpeed.
techie17 Posted June 16, 2022 Author Posted June 16, 2022 So how does the device authenticate with a username? I have put the $EMAIL variable in but as iPads dont have logins, theres nothing it can authenticate against.

I have put the $EMAIL variable in but as iPads dont have logins, theres nothing it can authenticate against. The filtering solution you have will only work in a 1:1 senario, even whether users have a Managed Apple ID to login into an shared iPad, which is a completely different thing altogether. Using a Shared iPad configuration is not designed to give iPad users a login account which can be tied to a safeguarding solution.
2ilent8cho Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 I'm not sure how it would work in a shared environment. We Sync our AD Users with JAMF, then in JAMF assign that user to an iPad, which Lightspeed then reads as the $EMAIL so no need to authenticate, but we can do that because that iPad is allocated to that student.
techie17 Posted June 16, 2022 Author Posted June 16, 2022 (edited) We have been trying to setup lightspeed filter for the past two weeks and support is not great if im honest. The live chat is hardly ever available and when i log a case they take a very long time in getting back. Its like they aren't bothered in trying to help setup the solution once its been purchased. All out ipads work as a shared device so not 1:1 and wont be assigned to users as we are SEN. Edited June 16, 2022 by techie17

That is not going to work, devices have to assigned to a single user in the MDM, shared iPad is not a substitute for this.

So would i have to sync users to our Meraki and Intune MDMs, then assign and owner to the devices, even if we created generic accounts specifically for iPads? I can still filter the devices okay, it just comes up with "unknown" for the user in Lightspeed.
techie17 Posted June 17, 2022 Author Posted June 17, 2022 Should windows clients and iOS client report the correct internal IP addresses in Lightspeed Filter? Our LS filter reports the internal IP address for windows clients as 169.254.108.x and doesn't even report the Internal IP address for IOS clients. It does report on the serial number of the device for Windows clients but nothing for iPads so should it report all details correctly? The report i go to is Reports - Web Activity Log
mthomas08 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 Sorry for the bump on this, but has anyone got this working with Mosyle MDM? Thank you
DBazeley95 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 I've managed to get it deployed via Mosyle in the past, are you having a problem?
mthomas08 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 I've managed to get it deployed via Mosyle in the past, are you having a problem? I'm following the Lightspeed guide but not working. What exactly do you have setup through Mosyle to get it working? I've done the Web filtering config. Nothing happens on the iPad, even with the Relay app installed. This is what I've used and put in our own customer ID. Thank you!
DBazeley95 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 I have this setup as the profile. Can you see the profile in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > Content Filter?
mthomas08 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 Thank you, this has actually helped point me in the right direction. The app is telling me "doesn't support this profile" so I'll have to go through and see why.
mthomas08 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 Had to contact Mosyle support. I can't figure out why this Web Filtering profile won't deploy. I've gone through all the settings and it should just work fine.
DBazeley95 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 Can you remove the other web filter profile and see if it starts working?
mthomas08 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 There isn't any other web filter profiles, I've only got the new 1 setup. All fresh and newly setup and testing for a handful of students. I did try removing the other profiles to see if they were blocking it. Only other thing I can think of is 1:1 assigning, currently setup as a shared.
DBazeley95 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 The iPads have to be 1:1 with a Teacher/Staff/Student account, the account needs to have an email address to match against in Lightspeed Filter. In the past I have setup [email protected] as a way around it, then I know which device is doing what in Filter.
mthomas08 Posted January 28, 2025 Posted January 28, 2025 Thank you, I feared it would be that way. Thanks again!
