migrate google domain for gmail?

Hi guys, we have a school that's been using gsuite for a few years now. They have http://www.abcprimary.org.uk, but they have been using Office 365 and Outlook with their abc.la.sch.uk domain.

 

They now want to go Google 100% so will be using gmail, so to avoid changing their addresses, what's the best way to their gsuite working on abc.la.sch.uk ?

 

Their local Ad does'nt use any of these domains.

 

Alias?

Migrate from their .org.uk to sch.uk domain??

a) You can add extra domains to AD which only affects syncing

b) Google doesn't use that anyway, just uses the mail field

 

So 1. Add everyone's email address to AD

2. Sync to google with GCDS

3. Sync passwords with GCPS

Make sure everyone can login properly with Google

 

Then

If you just want to do a hard cutoff over the summer holidays it's much easier, change MX record, move data, done.

 

As you already have logins on google step 1 is to add the 2nd domain to google, then change everyone's login to be their email address, and then setup sync as before.

Cheers for that, we already have accounts populated in their Workspace using LGFL's USO. So its all synced. inc their e-mail So i could drop an alias in Workspace and they can log in and continue to use abc.la.sch.uk for e-mails?

You'll be able to add the abc.la.sch.uk domain to Google Workspace as a user alias domain, which automatically adds @abc.la.sch.uk aliases to all the existing (and future) abcprimary.org.uk accounts that you have.

 

When adding the domain to Goole Workspace, you'll need to add a DNS record to complete the Google domain verification, but that won't affect anything on the O365 side (domains can be used simultaneously across both platforms without issue). The mail flow for that domain won't be affected until you start updating MX records.

You want to stop using 365 for email and start using Google. It sounds to me that you want (in MS parlance) a cut-over migration.

You will need to update your MX records to point to the google servers allowing inbound delivery of mail from the internet to their google accounts. Replace the ones that point to 365 servers.

You will need to add/update your .sch.uk domain's SPF and DMARC records to authorise the google servers to be sending email for your domain.

This last step is very important. We often have to get emails from Google Schools out of quarantine because their admins have not correctly configured SPR/DKIM/DMARC.

 

Migrate the old 365 mailboxes to Google. (though, perhaps not... If your data retention policies allow, now might be a good time to age-out all that unnecessary archived mail and save yourself a GPDR headache...)

There'll need to be some element of migrating messages from O365 over to Gmail, even if you don't want the historical data migrated, because there'll be a period of several hours during cutover where messages may still get routed to O365 rather than Gmail. Either that or setting up dual delivery for a while so that your users have an easier time of transition.

 

It's been quite a few years since we did our, but I remember that Exchange inboxes that had complex, deep folder structures (sometimes with literally hundreds of folders) were a bit of a nightmare to get straightened out once migrated to Gmail. Gmail did not like having hundreds of labels with deep nesting going on. Expect some issues like that where some users may need to continue using 365 for email for a while.
