dobbyit Posted May 13, 2022 Posted May 13, 2022 I work at a large primary school have a range of switches and APs all ubiquiti. Not too far from Manchester, I am based in Accrington. PM me if you want to discuss 1
synaesthesia Posted May 13, 2022 Posted May 13, 2022 (edited) Just worth mentioning that stock for most Ubiquiti lines is diabolical at the moment (similar story for many manufacturers). Happily though I was able to source the NanoHD models which are awesome little access points! ** Edit - thought I should add, those were from 4Gon although MSDist also had stock of the nanoHD. Wave9_Lee Posted May 13, 2022 Posted May 13, 2022 Also bear in mind that Connect the Classroom phase 2 announcement soon, so if you're in one of the educational investment regions, might want to hold off investing. You may qualify for a free LAN... 1
mdrabble Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 I'm based in Manchester and have 45 x Nano HD Access Points. Been in since beginning of 2019 and had no major issues - other than a dodgy firmware release. Did take a couple of weeks to iron out some teething problems as no real support other than via forums, and we did it as a self install - so it depends if you need support etc. Have it setup with a Windows NPS authenticating users and then dynamically assigning them to a VLAN, depending if staff, student etc. Use the Guest Wifi with Portal for visitors and they grab single use Wifi codes from our office - as cannot assign Filter rules codes or people ont he guest Wifi, I have set the Guest Wifi to use Student Filtering Biggest issue is getting users to realise they need to install the Smoothwall certificate - as they never follow the guide. You cannot do anything fancy with the Unifi Setup as some "feature" require the Unifi Gateway, such as Traffic Insights, Bandwidth shaping, traffic blocking such as VPNs etc which I tried and it caused issues with Smoothwall. Price was our biggest factor - would I cosider looking at other vendors when I come to replace the Unifi APs Yes as different systems offer different things and also depends on what supprt is required. It is also worth noting that you will need some kind of Controller to Manager your APs - I have an Local VM running Ubuntu with their controller software, but they also offer Cloud Keys (which never used so cannot comment on them) Have for you to message and and arrange a visit if you want. Cheers Mark 1
