Clearing unread posts

This is a recent thing, and I think it's a thing not just something I've imagined!

 

When I visit the site I'm logged in by my browser....I go to new posts and get 1/2 way through looking at posts then I get called away from my desk and come back...forget I was reading through posts and close the browser.

 

When I come back to it there's no posts under my new posts list

 

Is there some automatic "mark posts read" thing that I can turn off? :S

The new posts feature is based on the time you last access the forum, offset against the posts that have been made since that time. When you close your browser and come back, your last access time has changed. This is simply the way it works.

 

When I have a similar problem, I use the "Today's post" feature, which gives you the same style list, but based on the last 24 hours of posts EduGeek.net Forums - Search Results

There was an experiment for a few weeks with an alternative system, but it drove most of us nuts having to click on "Mark as read"

 

It got switched back... The Today's posts search is what you need to see everything not previousy read

Must admit that's the way I've always preferred forums to work as it can take me ages to read a days posts when I'm trying to do many things at once. Also means I can refer back to a thread I have read but had a thought on later and wish to reread easily from the new posts list.

 

Suppose it depends what you're used to though, that's just the way the forums I started on worked and I suppose it's etched in as being the norm.

You could just use the rss feed for the site/forum?

The link is at the bottom of every page and on the subbar of the forums on the left side above. That page has the urls for each of the forums and the site wide one.

I use the recent threads one on my iGoogle page.

What happend to the "Unread posts from last visit" or whatever it was called, feature?

When we first moved to vBulletin it was there and was great for what the OP is talking about - you could see what you hadn't read the last time..

I've got 5 pages of unread threads and it's been growing all morning

I didnt do anything lol. It only auto marks as read when you have not been on edugeek for 20 minutes or more.

Not sure what's been happening then... the list didn't cleared all morning.
