Is there any way that I can put a DVD on the server and allow clients to play it on their computers?

I have tried several things such as streaming media servers, but to no avail.

Is there any free options available to do this?

I don't want lots of clients connected - about 2 at a time!

Convert the DVD to .avi and stream it.

How do i convert it?

There may be copyright issues.

I checked with the manufacturers and we are allowed to do this!

How fast is your network?

100Mbps to clients, servers have 4 network ports teamed at 1Gbps each

1. Use something like bitripper to create avi.

2. Copy it to local client/s hd or an external usb drive

3. Play it

I suggest #2 otherwise you will end up with huge traffic and probably horribly jerky video.

It depends on the bitrate / resolution of the files. If only 2 people want to play it at once then 100mbit may be OK. It depends how much network traffic you have at the moment.

Another alternative is streaming right from the drive with VLC

Used it before to great success

Media Player Classic can do this too - just point it at the .VOBs and it will play them if the DVD doesn't have protection on it.
