Hi All...

Who here uses a status page within their school and do the staff actually use it? How do you get staff to use it without ringing, email or coming through the door?

If you have a status page what is on your page, can you list them?

Also how do you manage the statuses when something goes down like the Printers?

I know this will be different for all schools but it'll be really interesting to know what people are doing and what is being listed.

Cheers for now!

Lock the door, put the phone and email behind a pin code that's at the bottom of the status page?

Other options include: least priority for people who can't read, or completely ignoring them, or one click auto respond with: check status page at https://...., or charging departments based on usage of IT Support.

Main thing about the page is to put in it terms of user services, not IT services. No one cares if server 47 is offline, they care if they can't use application x. If it's a problem with a specific room/building, can it be in the form of a map?

We have a public-facing status page via uptimerobot.com that gives an overview of which services are working correctly. It's a mix of third-party services we use and externally-available internal applications.

It's most frequently used for chasing suppliers about service availability.

I'm currently building one to show:

Today's child absences

Today's cover details

Which staff are currently in the building

Current tube status

The above is planned to be shown on a large screen in the staff room. The status page part of things can also be included as part of the default start screen for browsers, so teachers can load it up on their desktop machines (login required).

I've started using statuspage.io It's free for two admins and upto 100 subscribers, it can get pricey after that. So far just throwing all the maintenance windows on there, and outages as they come. It has a nice postmortem feature to report past stuff as well, which is good for completeness.

Staff uptake will be another matter, but once it's a font of knowledge I'll push it with leadership, then start informing people to check, link it from staff sharepoint etc.
