We are looking to migrate our current Google Workspace setup to MS 365 - not my choice, being forced upon us by the "big school" in our group, with no offer of any training...

We want to retain Google for access to Classroom etc. during the transition, as well as keeping Google accounts for younger pupils. Will we be able to set up the 365 accounts through Azure AD to sync with the existing Google ones? So that staff (and older pupils) have a 365 account, which they sign into for emails, Office, Teams etc. but the domains are still registered to the Google Workspace.

Do you currently use GCDS and GSPS to sync Google users and passwords from Active Directory? If so, you'll be able to sync Azure AD with your AD, too, such that the same users accounts and passwords are then present in 365. You can have both your Google and 365 domains using the same domain name. Mail routing gets a bit complicated if you're wanting emails delivered to Google for some users but 365 for others, but it can all be done.

Thanks. Currently no link between Google and AD (still running Server 2012 on premises, this is being replaced with a 2022 server as part of the migration) but good to know it's at least feasible.

I would try and make as few changes as possible, and hook up the o365 to google apps such that the sign in process is managed by google apps. Teachers won't see a difference except they have accounts provisioned in both systems.

We have moved from MS to google, again not my choice and no discussion. Only few ppl took a decision.

Once you move to MS, try to decommission gmail ASAP. Don’t give your self extra work to manage two systems.
