Ad-hoc groups for registration-like tasks in SIMS or other MIS

It's been a while since used SIMS, and it wasn't much then. I'm wondering how easy it is to produce a pupil list for taking an offline register. The registration isn't for SIMS, it's for an ad-hoc group of pupils we as an external charity provide support to. It is likely to be pupils from a variety of year groups. It must not be treated like class or other registration groups and must not be included in the census submissions, so really just a printed list. What is key for us is the registrations reflect pupils preferred names, not legal names. Most of the schools we have are SIMS users, so my interest immediately is for a SIMS solution.

SIMS + excel - 5 minutes for an admin person to pick all the kids in the course.

but if you're external then you are going to be asking the school for a list anyway...

We have the list of pupils in our non school MIS, but I don't think the school does within SIMS. But what I need is the school to create the group/list and print out for registration purposes because our list doesn't support reporting 'preferred name' and I'm hoping the school can. I guess a good example would be a lunch club where the school wants to track attendance, but it's not part of the census dataset.

I'm hoping I can speak to their data manager/SIMS administrator (if they have one), but could you point me to menu options for.

i) creating the group of pupils that keeps it away from normal classes/registration groups

ii) building the report or using a predefined one

I'm hoping the can just meet the request we have, but if they aren't sure they can, I want to be able to say 'What about using x,y,z'?

In our scenario, we will need to track attendance, but the school doesn't really need to.

1. Focus > groups > user define groups - add students (any year group)

2. standard custom report - make sure there's a sub report of type "group membership" filtered to the name of the group created in step 1.

I have to do this already for a couple of external intervention groups - can you tell us which one you're with?
