Group Policies Not Firing/Working

Loopback, this is for GPO policies that only have a computer setting that you want to apply to a user?

 

Will a Computer GPO with loopback show as a User policy in RSOP/GPRESULT...?

 

Sorry I've never used loopback, all my computers are in Computer OUs with Computer GPOs and users in user OUs with User GPOs...

 

Never really knew why, but I've just always done it this way, it's very basic I guess, but just easier for me (and we have a very small uncomplicated network). I haven't found anything that I've needed to make it more complicated yet, I don't even use WMI filtering.

Loopback is for user settings that you want to apply via a computer OU. For example, if you have different desktops for different classrooms, you can apply desktop folder redirection based on location. In this case, you would enable loopback processing as a computer policy, folder redirection as a user policy, both in the same GPO then apply the GPO to a computer OU.

loopback typical use case was for printers (a user GPO that is applied to a computer container) with loop back enabled, it'll add the printer to any user logging into that PC.

 

You should run the "Group Policy Modelling" wizard, this'll show what is expected to be applied. (to a given user or user container using a given PC or computer container)

 

Then run the "Group policy Results Wizard" this'll show what RSOP does but also has the policy event logs. (and saves you getting out your seat) You'll need WMI firewall access setup to the workstation.

 

You can also PUSH a GPO update from the group policy management, right click on a container and select Group policy update...
