Xbox no internet connection

Our after school club currently have an Xbox 360 which they want to upgrade to a newer xbox.

 

The current xbox has no internet connection and works fine off discs.

 

Ideally I don't want any new xbox to have an internet connection - it would be tricky to do through our filtering anyway and opens up too many safeguarding issues.

 

If they get a newer Xbox, are they going to actually be able to use it always off-line? I haven't used a modern console but imagine they rely considerably more on an online account now?

Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles have an offline mode which should keep it working for a while without calling home. It'll need to see the internet connection first to set this up.

 

Eventually it'll ask to speak to "home base" as it were, but its not the "once a day" that it used to be anymore!

From what I've seen it needs internet connection every time you install a new game (even if you buy the disk version), every time someone logs in and I think if you swap games and the game wasn't originally "installed" from disk (checks you haven't installed it with the same license on a different machine). Might have some kind of cache system nowadays to mitigate for missing internet as @paulkerton says, but I've seen errors when internet connection was missing on mine. Edited February 8, 2022 by jmak
