Hi,

Ever since Microsoft did the security updates last year had strange issues on the odd laptop here and there. However I have hit a wall with one laptop trust it to be the headteachers. Her printers have stopped working, usually I would uninstall the last 3-4 security updates which seemed to fix the issue late last year.

However when I am trying to uninstall the updates in control panel the "Uninstall" option just isn't there, it shows for like Servicing Stack and other updates just not the security update I want to uninstall. I have tried the wusa /uninstall /kb:HotFixID in powershell and that fails as well.

Apart from rebuilding the machine which she doesn't want us to do is there anyone out there who has managed to remove the updates when they seem to be permanently installed?

Thanks

Curt

As a test have you tried just setting the regkey which bypasses the update changes to see if that fixes it?

If you set RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators to 0 it effectively nulls the printer update (yes it means the security issue is back but if you're uninstalling it anyway no difference), that way if it's related to your issue it'll just let you print as soon as you restart once it's setup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/kb5005652-manage-new-point-and-print-default-driver-installation-behavior-cve-2021-34481-873642bf-2634-49c5-a23b-6d8e9a302872

At least if that narrows it down to the update still you can do a quick workaround while trying to sort it properly

What version of Win10 are you using on this laptop and are the printers networked and how are they deployed/installed?

The full version of workarounds necessary (in my experience) are:

Package Point and print - Approved servers = Print Server

Point and Print Restrictions - Everything enabled including Print Server FQDN. Both installing and updating = Do not show warning or elevation

RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators - reg edit = 0

RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled - reg edit = 0 (this is on both clients and the Print Server - not 100% sure it is necessary on both but I ran out of time for testing and left it as this once everything worked).

Have you deleted these printers and reinstalled?

With the above settings my clients (LTSC 1809) are fully up to date with January CU and printing OK.

But strange you are only having issues on certain laptops, any differences in those that can and the one that cannot...?

I also didn't think WUSA worked anymore for CUs...?
