Schedule user log out of Chromebook

We have a request relating to a student who has been given a Chromebook for home use, to limit the time that the Chromebook is accessible. What we are looking for is to schedule a shutdown with a warning and disable logins to the Chromebook between certain hours? I think this is possible through Family Link, but can't find a way to do this from the Google workspace management console. Has anyone come up with a solution for a request like this?

Family Link would be the solution, or purchasing a third-party solution for IdP

Apologies for the slight necro raising, but I'm getting a few requests from parents for options to control their child's Chromebook. Is there anyway of getting Family Link to work with school education accounts and parental gmail accounts? Or should I be looking at another solution?

Control it in what way? If you want to limit sign in between certain hours, you'd probably need to find an idP that can do that.

To be able to view what websites have been accessed

 

There is part of me that wants to change our filter to something like Securly, which offers Parental controls, but that's quite a big shift, and Smoothwall have been acquired by a company that specializes in family control software, so you'd like to think they'll bring something to market fairly soon. However, it would be nice to be able to offer parents a solution.

 

And forgive the stupid question, but idP? I presume not International Drivers Permit

We use Securly as the web filter on our Chromebooks, there is a parental app (securly home) that allows the parents to set offline schedules and adjust the web filtering to suit them.

Yes, I would look at a Securly or Lightspeed for the Parental Control side of things. We have Lightspeed and have been thoroughly impressed so far.

A free way to limit log in times is to schedule a task to move the Chromebooks from an OU that allows sign in to one that doesn't (and probably blocks all browsing and/or forces a sign out too).

 

We do something similar for camera use. We allow students to use the camera during school hours but not in the evening or overnight.

My solution for now is to get the parent to sign a consent form giving permission for the device to allow personal accounts to be signed in outside school hours. The student then signs in with their Gmail account, which should be a 'child' account in the Google Family, which gives the parent the control they're after.

 

Interestingly, when I tested this with my child's account, it asked if I wanted to add an education account during sign in. I didn't try this, but I wonder if that's a possible solution...
