Google Sites - Analytics / cookies. Just need some basic info please.

We were just downgraded in an audit as our site uses cookies and possibly analytics, but after checking the settings 'analytics' is disabled on our Google site.

 

When I go onto our site it does have this message pop up.....

This site uses cookies from Google to deliver its services and to analyze traffic. Information about your use of this site is shared with Google. By using this site, you agree to its use of cookies.

 

Can I disable cookies also?

Is this a glitch and analytics is still running even though I have turned it off?

Or will the site need cookies even though analytics is off?

What audit thinks you shouldn't have cookies and analytics on your website? Are you supposed to leave yourself in a position where you don't have workable statistics and information about who is accessing your site and when?

Are you not supposed to be able to use cookies to store information such as preferences for the user that they create themselves?

 

Me thinks that audit is perhaps unsuitable.

Is it that Google eats up those cookies as well...?

 

The message isn't specifically saying that 'you' use cookies on your site to do those things, but that Google does 'to deliver its services and to analyze traffic'.

One of the concerns I have with Google Analytics on school websites is the lack of options the visitor has regarding them, i.e. either accept them all or change settings in your browser. I use a cookie-free version of Statcounter on our website.

As analytics is disabled on our website, does this mean that cookies are also disabled or not?

Another issue I have come across is that our Google site, although it pops up a cookie box acceptance message, it doesn't offer an opt out option, is this not in breach of our GDPR rules????

I've been asked by our trust to look into hiring a new developer to improve our websites, in particular our SEO and use of Google Analytics to monitor traffic and downloads. Can anyone recommend any companies that specialise in this?
