O365 Mail Retention Policy

Looking to set retention policy for mail in O365 to delete all mail older than 3 years. Have attempted to set this in Compliance Manager > Information Governance and all looked successful, but on my test inbox all of the mail stays in the same place.

 

Are there any other steps that I may be be missing, does the policy only work with new mail items or am I just being impatient and it will kick in after x hours/days?

 

There is a confirmation message 'Items that are currently older than 3 years will be permanently deleted after you turn on this policy', but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Our e-mail retention policy was setup within the classic Exchange Admin Centre

 

We created new Retention Tags with the retention action set to Delete and Allow Recovery and the retention period to be how many days we wanted it to stay.

Next we created a new retention policy and applied the tags we wanted for those staff that could keep mail for up to 3 years, and updated the tags in the default MRM Policy so that everyone else would get the tags for only 1 year.

 

For those users with the longer retention period, we then updated their Mailbox so they got the correct retention policy, and unless you run a PS script to force it to take effect straight away, the following day it should then show the retention policy under e-mail header in Outlook and the date it will expire

Turns out I was being impatient...3 days later the policy has kicked in.

You can force it to run on a mailbox straight away with the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant powershell command.

Very handy when your wanting to get it setup for existing users, or change settings to make sure it's working without waiting for the normal sync process to take effect
