iPad is locked - no devices listed in Apple School Manager

I took over a school a few years ago and when I did they had a teacher that looked after the iPads, which was handy as I had never really looked after iPads. The teacher recently left and I have just had an email saying one of the iPads is locked and needs un-locking. Not 100% sure what this means but think it might mean a password was entered in wrongly or something.

 

Just logged into Apple School Manager from home and there are no devices listed, I do remember the school has a mac mini with configurator installed, would I need to use this to un-lock the device?

 

Any advice or pointers before I visit in the morning.

 

EDIT - the message on the screen is - ipad disabled connect to itunes.

If the iPad is locked it’s likely someone has tried too many times to unlock it with the wrong passcode, you will need to dfu the iPad and reset it using AC2 you can’t use Apple School Manager to unlock an iPad.

The iPad is not listed in AC2, I am gussing it was handed to a teacher and they just set it up themselves, who knows.

 

Would this mean I should reset it using iTunes?

Once the device is in DFU mode and connected to the Mac running AC2 you will be able to restore it from there. iTunes would also work.

 

Fastest way to get into DFU mode. Power the iPad off, plug a USB cable into the computer, hold down the home button on the iPad, connect the lightning/usb c cable to the ipad while still holding down home. You should see some information on the screen about recovery mode and the device will show up in AC2/iTunes. Choose restore.

 

edit: if the device doesnt have a home button I believe it is a combination of the side and volume buttons to get into DFU mode. The link above should tell you.
