Backing up Apache2Traid

Hi guys & girls

 

I am using symantec backup exec 11D to backup the school webserver. The server runs apche2triad. so far I have only been backing-up the apache2triad folder where all the websites and databases live. I am running Edugeek Joomla for the website, what happens if the server dies how can I get the database up and running again? Do I need to be backing something else up?

 

Your advice is appreciated.

If you backup the database then you can restore the database again should you need to. You will however need a full backup of the database; I'm not sure what it is that you're backing up?

 

Apache2Triad comes with phpMyAdmin so you could use this to create a complete backup of the database and then save this to an area on the webserver and then include this area in the backup that you make with Symantec.

The thing is I don’t want to keep doing it manually as I will forget plus I will be away for a month shortly so unable to do it. I would like it to be done automatically.

If you use MySQL administrator then you can schedule database backups.

The command line mysqldump.exe will let you dump the whole lot to a text file, and that can called from a batch file and run as a scheduled task

My mysql instance is on a Mac, so this is the Unix variant, but it should be similar/identical

 

mysqldump -u username --password=password --all-databases > path-to-file.sql

 

The main gotcha is to make sure the username and password you supply have sufficient rights to be able to read everything, but not too many rights that you would be uncomfortable putting the password in plain text, ie don't use root!
