Backup process (incorporating off-site) with Veeam

Hi all,

 

I know there are a lot of Veeam users on here and I wondered how people had setup their jobs to incorporate off-site?

 

I had planned on:

• Nightly backup from Veeam to NAS (encrypted!)
  
• Mirror NAS to USB drive nightly that can be taken off-site weekly
  

 

 

So far, so good. I have, however tried a recovery today and I cannot, for the life of me, get it to load the backups! They seem to import, take the backup key and show the number of backups but when I click on restore it comes up with an error. I am guessing it is something to do with my setup.

 

I have tried setting the USB drive up as a share (and even given the computer the same name as the NAS!). As a side-note, on the repository it only shows 2.6gb of data, rather than the correct ~200gb.

 

Am I best plugging the USB straight in to the server and setting a secondary job up on Veeam specifically for the USB backup? Want it as simple and minimal fuss as possible.

We use the Veaam Cloud Connect feature which works well and is probably the simplest and most robust setup you can have. It does add to the cost though as the cloud provider you use has to specifically support Veeam Cloud Connect.

I currently have Veeam do nightly backups to the Backup Server, These are copied using Veeam backup copies to our Synology NAS. The NAS is then Synced to google Drive.

 

I also do intermittent VeeamZip backups to USB drive every time i start to worry about backups.

 

Tested backups from google drive about a month ago and all failed because i forgot about the encryption used between the NAS and Google drive. Needed the Synology decrypt tool to decrypt the backups before they would work.

 

Currently working on a detailed document on how to recover from backups for our current environment.

 

Test your backups!!

 

 

Update: Forgot to mention NAS is in a separate building on the same site.

How are you restoring from Google Drive? Are you having to restore the file to the NAS first and then restore through Veeam?

I manually downloaded the files from Google Drive to my desktop. Decrypted them with the Synology tool then used the Veeam extractor to get access the the VM file then restore the file straight in to hyper v.

 

Its not as straight forward as recovering from Veeam but in a disaster recovery situation its stand alone and seems to work well.

 

Unsure on how to get the files back in to Veeam - Will have a look this afternoon.

I see, I'm looking at a similar solution but using Altaro rather than Veeam.

Would the decryption tool still work if the NAS had to be reformatted and started from fresh? I assume you could use any Synology NAS to decrypt the files?

Yes, i downloaded the tool from the Synology website and used it on my desktop. NAS was not involved in the decryption.

 

I have everything required on a Portable HDD so i should be able to recover from most devices. Just have to remember all the passwords

I'm looking at our backups also. Do veam still do a free version that is "good enough" to back up a few hyper-v VMs

e.g. backup to a usb drive for an offline copy.

On the website they have lots of products! Found the veam agent for PCs and "Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition"

The latter seems to be the one I should be trying ?

So I've just redesigned and setup a new backup solution so it works in the following.

 

Veeam backing up to an onsite NAS, with a scale out repository offloading to a Wasabi Cloud Storage account which is protected and has immutable backups.

 

I will also be adding in a usb hard drive rotation into the solution once they arrive as well.

My backup server has a script which enables the NIC just before the scheduled backups start, and another to disable it at the end.
