iDRAC version licensing on DELL server

Had a bit of a scare last night whilst rebooting the server from home and then not being able to remote into it....

 

A lot of Googling pointed me to various methods of getting into the server and rebooting it and one option was iDRAC.

 

We have this set-up on the other server, but for some reason not this one so today I looked into it.

 

So I set it all up via OMSA and eagerly browsed to the iDRAC... What am I supposed to do with this...?

 

 

Doing a bit of research leads me to believe it is something you have to pay a license for, but I have also seen the 'basic' version should at least have some minimum control functions like rebooting...no?

I bought a iDrac 8 Enterprise license off ebay for about £80. I think you can get official ones for like under £200.

 

But never seen the basic interface, Enterprise does give a lot of functionality and prob worth going for. Alternatively you could setup IPMI and that would give you some power/status control remotely.

Not sure about ebay for licenses if I'm honest (not being sniffy, just too worried about being burnt) how do they get Dell licenses anyway?

Actually that's probably all I'm after - I don't tend to need to do too much in the guts of the servers remotely - anywhere you could point me to for setting up IPMI?

I was dubious about the iDRAC license but they offered full refund and it was only for home.

 

I used RACADM and setup a linux box, my hope was something cheap and nasty to get a server booting on a schedule but you can use RADADM to shutdown etc. This was for a Dell T620 running iDRAC 7 and still a project to complete when I get my self motivated.
