Wasn't sure where to put this as its more a VoIP type question but no dedicated area for it

 

For VoIP most are familiar with your various handsets powered by PoE but most either rely on connection to a server in the cloud or local onsite server.

 

I've been involved with VoIP bits for years but never had to put in too much thought about it but I'm getting more and more questions asked that involve VoIP and been doing a bit of digging and research into a few bits for projects.

 

So recently I ported a number to Andrews & Arnold saving £16 a month which is a bonus but gave me more options than I had before and more flexibility. On a note I would recommend Andrews & Arnold to any tech wanting to do stuff on their own, I looked at 3 or 4 companies offerings and they met what I wanted and process was fairly painless.

 

Now I've been asked to save money which I can do but then got me looking at the Gigaset N300IP again, which I think is going to suit what I need to do, does anyone own or use one here? I want to bring a SIP trunk in and have a few cordless handsets, I presume looking at what I can online its a small PBX type system and you can transfer between phones but also have a different external number to each phone but then transfer calls between each handset if needed?

Options are: cloud hosting, requires internet, pay per phone.

run your own pbx as a VM, pay for sip lines, cheapest option

 

I pay something like £8 per simulateous line, with more free minutes than I could ever use, with Gamma SIP lines, and run freepbx. So just buy phones for £40ish. Wireless is more annoying though

I have one at home with three mixed handsets and the SIP from A&A and it works really well. It's not like having a multiline trunk with presented numbers though, you set up multiple SIP accounts for it to connect to and then define which handsets use them. Works really nicely for home but it's quite old now and there are no updates being developed so firewall it completely.

That is what I wanted to know exactly @powdarrmonkey.

 

I presume you assign each handset an extension number as that bit isn't clear or is it a case of you transfer you select from a list presented to you?

 

It will suite exactly what I need which is simple that the end user can manage but do what they want but in the long term save a fortune and has the ability to have POTS into it too.

Yes, the POTS connection was a key feature when I bought it ten years ago, no calls on that line any more but useful with a UPS for an emergency.

 

Handsets are named and you choose from a list when making an intercom call or a transfer.
