The Chesil Beach Cannon (Inshore) Site lies at the toe of the beach and consists of 8 large cast-iron muzzle-loading cannons and a concentration of archaeological material that lie at a depth of 11m.

 

This assemblage is likely to be indicative of the spot where a merchant vessel was dashed upon Chesil Beach at some point during the mid-17th to mid-18th century, just one of many more like it to have fallen foul of this often-treacherous lee shore.

 

 

The Chesil Beach Cannon offshore site lies approximately 220m to the south of the inshore site. The list entry for statutory protection of the site lists seven cast-iron cannons lying on the seabed, but without any accompanying archaeological material.

 

The site lies at a depth of 15m and covers an area of about 30m by 12m. Although no excavation has yet taken place, there is no evidence of buried archaeological material or wreck remains.
