SimonL Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Hello, We provide IT support to a primary school and 'inherited' their fleet of iPads, that are managed via Lightspeed. A problem has developed in recent weeks/months that wasn't a problem previously. We have just updated all of the device to IOS 14.3 in an attempt to resolve tis, but no improvement. Within Safari, typing a search e.g. "BBC News" into the address bar results in one of two things happening. Either a blank window is displayed on top of the requested page, or a "This connection is not private" message is displayed. The school uses a County Council provided broadband service, that uses Smoothwall for web filtering, but no problem accessing the Web from PCs, so appears to be an iPad specific problem. Other wb sites e.g. purplemash.com appear to work normally, so this doesn't look like a generic inability to access the Web. Any ideas ? Thanks
Brimstone Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 SSL Trust Certficate???? Have you installed this via the MDM managing the iPads? Has the cert expired? It has been known to also happen when try to set the date and time manually and they don't match, try turning location services on (it's critical they are turned on)
rjf2019 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Sounds a little like SSL to me too. Have you tried it over 4G tethering to see if you can replicate the issue?
Bev Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Do you have the web filtering part of lightspeed installed as well, I think it's called 'Relay'? We used this for a year but found it very glitchy and ended up removing it as it caused so many frustrations. There is an app associated with it and I found it you removed the app the web worked immediately, so I was able to determine that it was definitely the filtering that was causing the issues,
SimonL Posted January 7, 2021 Author Posted January 7, 2021 Thanks guys. We're not really that into Apple kit and it was originally set up by a previous support company, via an Apple Education reseller. We're in contact with that company and hopefully, this will prove to be straightforward.
