Can I use standard SATA drive in PowerEdge server?

Hi, I just got a cheap Dell PowerEdge T420 server that comes with some SAS drives. The SAS drives themselves are 2.5 inch size but the caddy they are in is 3.5 with an adapter for the smaller drives.

 

I have a couple of 8TB drives in my NAS. If I took the adapter out from the caddy, do you think I would be good to use the 8TB SATA drives in the server or are the back plate connectors different.

I have a few T320s with a mix of sata SSDs and assorted mechanical SAS/SATA disks. You can't mix SAS & SATA drives in the same array (if you wanted RAID10 and had 4 500GB drives but 2 are sata and the others are SAS, you would be limited to 2 RAID1 arrays (1 SATA and 1 SAS))

With newer ones or with a SAN, you may be locked to Dell firmware drives, but with one that age you’ll be fine. Assuming your storage controller can address 8tb drives anyway, and I’d be surprised if it couldn’t.
