i5 processors

OK, up front time - I've not messed with actual component choice for a long time...

 

The story - Sorta-dorta (D1, lives with her father) reports that her 2yr old laptop* has been "making funny noises" for some time. Her twin, D2, brought hers to me 6 months ago to have bits of plastic removed from the fan, D2 freely admits to dropping it 'a few time'; D1 NEVER drops hers (yeah - RIGHT).

 

D1 now says laptop doesn't work. Father says fan isn't turning. I suspect a cooked processor. So two questions -

 

1) Would you replace the processor, after fixing the fan? Or is the risk of further damage, and good money after bad, too high?

 

2) Is an i5 and i5 an i5? Or are there different 'flavours' that would have to be matched?

 

Father bought them 2 years ago, and is hinting that we might at least go 1/2s on a replacement for xmas. That is about twice what we were thinking of spending, bearing in mind we have to keep it 'fair' with twins...

The processor in that laptop will be soldered in place. Definitely not something designed to be user-replaceable!

 

If the cpu is cooked, you have to ask if there's damage to the motherboard also.

 

Most HP laptops will error then auto shutdown if they detect a fan fault.

Could it be this is what she means by 'it doesn't work'?

 

If so, then a new fan could be all it needs

it may not boot as it detects that the fan isn't spinning but usually just warns you at boot. CPUs will throttle and shutdown if they overheat but maybe months of running at 90+ would kill it... if it wont turn on from cold, I'd walk away.

AND... in conclusion. Processor fine, pounds of fluff removed from the fan and grill.

 

On the downside - the hinges are really stiff (on both machines) and this has resulted in the pillars that the fixing screws go into shearing off. Definitely a design fault, rather than abuse. Gave me the willies opening and closing it with the base off. Nuts & bolts added, now all is well.
