Personalised settings not responding at 1st login 2004

Since moving from LTSB 1607 to edu 2004, I am noticing we are getting a lot of random black screens with personalised settings box not responding. After restart it seems to fix the issue.

 

So far:-

- Updated all drivers on computers including bios firmware.

- removed and recreated all gpos applied.

- Moved all users to local profiles with delprof2 and deleting student profiles at shutdown.

- Seems to affecting our 7th gen i3 nucs the most, which we have a lot of.

 

I know there is numerous posts on first login issues with windows 10. But this is the first time we have had any issues.

I think this was supposedly fixed, but I remember a long time ago when we first switched to W10 there was a horrible issue logging on between W10 versions e.g. if someone only logged onto 1903 devices they'd be fine, but if they then logged on to a 1909 device, it would black screen. If they then logged onto another 1909 device they'd be fine, until they hit a 1903 machine and would black screen. I think we eventually ended up splitting out the user profiles so different W10 versions used different profiles.. Like I said, I thought they'd fixed this, but I'd guess it's to do with the user profiles.

 

On 1909 and 2004, once a month immediately after windows updates we get black screens and very slow logons. Wish I knew why..

With using local profiles I don't think that is the issue. But I am wondering if it is related to windows updates.

It could be one of the entries in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components

They are processed when the user profile is first created.

You can test each one in turn as they can be disabled by adding a REG_DWORD entry "Enabled" with a value of 0
