AB_IT Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 Hey All Hopefully someone can help, I have a home server running Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop which has my plex server installed on it. I tried to update it to 20.04 as I was sick of the prompt and since then I've been having issues with it. At first it restarted and put me back to the login page, so when I logged in it would just freeze and wouldn't go to my desktop. I then entered the terminal and used commands to reinstall desktop and Unity I think, found it on a forum and since then it's doing the following. It's strange because when it gets to the end screen I can access my plex library so it is loading things I just can't do anything, type anything or see the gui it's just stuck at a black screen with a white text marker at the top. I'd rather not have to reinstall ubuntu from scratch it took me ages to configure it how I wanted and as I'm just a novice it'll take me ages again! Any help would be most appreciated!
admars Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 can you ctrl alt f1 and log into terminal did all those words that zoomed up the screen have anything meaningful? you've skipped a couple of versions, I think the login screen may have had some changes/got replaced, I use mint so I'm a bit hazy if it was a mint specific thing, but doesn't officially support upgrades, and I remember for one you had to manually uninstall something, and install something else round the login page sorry that's so vague, it was a while ago, but where I'm going in a roundabout way, is if you can log in to command prompt, you could say install xfce, or lxdm which might replace a broken thing.
Danp Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 I had this with my own machine at the home. Upgrade failed badly, couldn't open terminal etc. Ended up having to reinstall fresh and now it works really well, quicker and more stable than 18 was.

Cheers mate, unfortunately I can't get into terminal using any of the shortcuts I used to be able to before I reinstalled the desktop and unity but since it's been doing this I get nothing. No the words comes up just because it's showing all the services and applications it's loaded. I had this with my own machine at the home. Please don't say that, it was such a faff getting it setup how I wanted in the first place I'd hate to have to reconfigure everything again. There has to be something I can try, it's frustrating because like I say if I load plex on my phone it's still working so everything is working I just can't get to the GUI or terminal. When using a USB stick to reinstall 20.04 does it give you the option to upgrade over the top or does Ubuntu just give you the option of a fresh wipe? Edited October 19, 2020 by AB_IT

On mine I had the option to do both, install the update over the top or start fresh, I just went fresh because that worked for me.

Steve21 Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 (edited) You tried doing it via ctl-alt-f2 (rather than f1 as above) and then the normal startx etc? Also as a side note, depending on what "run some commands" was, have you tried disabling secureboot/enabling csm and seeing if it loads up? ADMaster Posted October 19, 2020 Posted October 19, 2020 If network services like plex are up, can you SSH in. Did you setup SSH? If not boot into single user mode. Here is an old answer on getting to single boot mode.
