mdrabble Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Being pushed to install Office 365 apps on computers instead of our current version of Office 2016 as staff experiencing some issues when editing documents on SharePoint etc. Do Capita now support Office 365 apps or is just the Office 2016/2019 versions? Cheers
DJ-1701 Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Personally, even if they say they aren't, I don't see how they can not support Microsoft 365, as it's in use by so many schools and is essentially the same framework as Office 2019.

Cheers Microsoft Office 365 Desktop apps are the 2019 version aren't they? Just automatically kept up to date? I don't use it, so please someone tell me if I'm wrong? But still, Capita SIMS holding up progress? I am shooketh!
robyholmes Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I don't think it's supported but we use Office 365 here and we've not found any issues yet.
DJ-1701 Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Yeah, using 365 64-Bit in two schools here, no issue either.
chazzy2501 Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 did anyone get the answer to deploying office 365 rather than office 2019 with regards to licensing? I still think I'm stuck having to deploy 2019 for users. Office 365 has some nice new features (like real time subtitles and dictation for power point) that 2019 does not have.
mdrabble Posted October 13, 2020 Author Posted October 13, 2020 Thanks for all the replies. Will have a play at installing Office 365 version on a test pc and I seem to remember some issues about shared device activations..... or was that possibly something else I’m thinking of??? Maths department will be happy if I can get this done and will go a long way towards integrating things for when we move towards sharepoint.
robyholmes Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 SDL here using A1 Plus on all staff and students. Only visitor accounts or exam students accounts are an issue. However I was told student A1 Plus licences could be used to cover these one off accounts.
smarties11 Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 We've been using Office 365 Pro Plus on all of our workstations since late 2017. We run current channel and tend to update every 2 or 3 months or when there are security fixes. No issues at all with SIMS.
mdrabble Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 How does activation work on shared devices? Is it just a case of setting GPO to automatically sign them in? Cheers
smarties11 Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 You can either use shared device activation or device based activation. Shared device activation is quite messy. So we opted for the latter, it basically activates the device by creating a new user for each device in O365. There is an activation tool provided for this (OPPTransition.exe). This worked great initially, however it is now broken and instead it just activates against the logged in user, even though when you check the registry the registered account is still the device account. This causes an issue as it uses 1 of the 10 devices each user is allowed. Staff that move about frequently then get errors saying they have reached their 10 device limit. It's on my list of things to fix. I suspect this method is now deprecated, as the latest info about device based activation on Microsoft's website describes a new method where you have to join or hybrid join each workstation to an Azure domain, then assign licenses in Azure AD. It's a real shame they didn't make the activation method more straightforward, either KMS or AD based. 1
robyholmes Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 DBA can only be used on EES customers, not OVES which most schools are. We are Shared Account Activation as so long as the machine is Azure AD join, it just works. No issues with licensing.

It just requires that you need to have the 'A1 Plus' licenses added on to your tenant, and that was cumbersome as Microsoft made this a bit of a chore for Schools to do. The new DBA method (which requires Azure joined/hybrid joined workstations) can also be used by OVS-ES. I'm interested to hear about your shared computer activation experiences though - when we looked at this 3 years ago it was quite messy as you had to store the licenses in a central path; plus it still counted towards the users personal 10 devices. How does the new model work for you? Thanks! 1

As far as Shared Activation goes, other than enabling it during the SCCT MSI build process, we've not done anything special. We've not hit any activation limits and our staff are moving round quite a bit. Basically its been very painless and other than a couple of machines failing to login to Office 365 currently (Which seemed to be machines we'd messed with account settings on for Office 2016) these just required a manual sign out in O365 and then back in again. 2
smarties11 Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Great; thanks Roby - I'll look into it - sounds like this is the way forward

SCCT MSI build - is that the same as the Setup.exe and the XML config file settings?
