Office 365 to Gmail Routing

I have a scenario in which staff and students share the same domain name (abc.org) and login domain for Google. I would like to keep things this way.

Staff use O365 for email on abc.org.

We would like to allow students to use Gmail for email with the same domain (abc.org) that they currently use.

I'm going to keep the MX record on the O365 side, what the most effective approach to get this done without changing the login and sharing experience for staff and students? I've heard about a number of things including dual delivery and using an alias domain.

Set abc.org to be 'internal relay' in O365. This is shorthand for 'don't NDR it if there's no mailbox here'

 

Then, you need to tell it where to go.

 

So setup a fixed route for abc.org to point to google. I'm not sure of the exact server name, but it would be the one that you'd set in DNS for MX if you wanted it to route to google.

And you need to set the inbound relay in GMAIL to accept mail from O365 too. Took me a while to find it but we needed it as some emails weren't arriving.

 

The GMAIL smart host name is aspmx.l.google.com
