With issues for HP printers cropping up a LOT I figured it was time to start a sort of FAQ thread that I can write up into a wiki later...

 

For now if anyone spots any useful resources that you can link to then this is the place to pop them.... Please don't use this to ask an HP question though (start a new thread or re-open an existing one).

There's plenty more that we have on the forums including a few of my own posts... but bear with me... As I said, I'll do a proper wiki of this lot to cover the bases as much as possible soon.

Ancient Chinese proverb say - a promised wiki never comes :)

 

Stop the FAQ here and now, post a link to the wiki and go do it on there. :)

You'll save yourself 50% of the total promised work :)

Well I'm using a Linux print server, which I believe gives me an unfair advantage in that department.

 

Well yeah... someone with a clue wrote the drivers there :)... well I hope so!... Certainly that would provide a useful insight on that side of things though especially with pykota, etc... Setup your own *Nix section sir and let loose the dogs of war...ish ;-)

Well no, the way it works is that the windows pcs use the generic postscript drivers (written by MS) and spit out postscript to the Linux box. The Linux box then runs it via the HPIJS/HPLIP software and sends it on to the printer. Where as your windows HP drivers appear to be written by monkeys, the HPLIP driver isn't. I blame open source. :)

Thanks, Simon. You have just saved me hours of bother. I've just installed an HP 2605dn through the Add Printer Wizard and creating a TCP/IP port, as in your instructions for the 2600. It got it's IP address itself when first plugged in to the network, so I just created a reservation for that address, which is now active. Doesn't seem to have bi-directional printing enabled anyway. (There is one problem at the moment, only with older clients, posting that separately if I don't hear back from HP soon).

 

I created a FITS build procedure as I went along (70 plus steps!!!). If anyone out there needs instructions in greater detail than on the wiki, I am happy to send a copy.
