Battery not charging

Good Afternoon,

 

We have a number of student laptops that have failed batteries which will not charge. Quite a lot of them started not charging around the same time, and we are not too sure why. I started my Surface Pro 4 yesterday to find that this also has a failed battery that will no longer charge! Is there a way of testing the batteries or resetting/kicking them back into action? It seems such a strange coincidence that this has all started happening around the same time. I have tried the usual different charger, checking battery connections etc. but i cannot get any of them working again.

If they're removable batteries I find that powering them up without the battery, then installing it while logged on seems to kick windows in to showing it's charging again. I guess they are flat and it's not just Windows saying they are?
