Changing Batteries in APC UPS - Help!

Got a UPS Status Smart-UPS SRT 5000 which is showing me "Battery near end of life. Order replacement battery, APCRBC140, for the internal pack, cartridge 1"

 

On the Web UI it shows Internal Pack and Battery Pack 1. It is the Internal Pack that is showing as needing replacement.

 

I ordered the battery pack and when looking at the UPS there are 4 cartridges when you open the front panel. I assume that one set of 2 will be the Internal Pack and 2 will be "Battery Pack 1" ?

Changed one set of 2 with the new ones. No change to the message, still says needs replacement. Swapped them back again and put the new ones in where the other 2 were but still it says needs replacement. I have run a self test after the swap too which comes back as passed.

 

Am I missing something here? I thought these batteries were hot swappable.

Have had the same thing come up on our APC UPS and have ordered a couple of battery packs (i.e. two 'pairs').

 

I tried re-seating the exiting batteries, as a hopeful gesture more than anything. After a few seconds the control panel on the unit asks whether the battery pack in a new one or not. Might you have missed a similar prompt on yours?

 

Yes, they should be hot-swappable, but you might need to tell it that you've installed a new battery and it might need to run a self-test on it too before the alert clears.

Funny that one of our UPS showed battery near end of line and I looked into this the other week.

 

I believe there are 8 batteries in each cartridge (might be 16), you can buy them for less than £15 each and replace them yourself for a fraction of the cost. I was all set to do this as I sourced the batteries from a local battery place but they wouldn't let me do it at work and for warranty. There are videos on YouTube, its simple really.

 

Yes I do believe they are hot swap able but it might need putting in bypass mode, they are currently sat waiting to go into the UPS in the server room.

Batteries only so you reuse the caddy if it has one and the cabling.

Yuasa NPH5-12 or Lucas 5-12 batteries both suitable, I had a quote on both and Lucas are nearly half the price of the Yuasa. Any good local battery supplier will be able to supply them.
