Exchange Online Address Book Issue - All students emails appearing in the GAL

Currently all users are in Exchange Online (Office 365)

 

All users are appearing in the global address list. When a member of staff searches for a name, they sometimes are emailing students instead of staff because they are adding the wrong name in a rush.

 

I have created two new address lists, one for staff and another for students, but the default address list when you open the address book in Outlook is the GAL which lists ALL users in the address book so students are still appearing in it. I don't want to create seperate address books because I still need staff to be able to see students email addresses within an address list and the default behaviour when opening Outlook Address Book is the GAL which will still list ALL users in that address book.

 

Questions:

1. How do you manage your address lists?

2. Is there a way to hide students from the GAL, but still make them appear in name searches such as within Teams or when sharing a file with someone?
