caffrey Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 (edited) Must be missing something but If I set up a meet from my non school email address on gmail and invite my school email address I get the message "you aren't allowed to join this video call" when the school address tries to join - Must be a setting somewhere Is it to do with Hangouts chat being turned off for the domain ? trying it now - so confusing all these products with the same name! caffrey Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 Been having a chat with Google this morning over this and they don't know why - nor can help with private gmail accounts. Thanks for your chat today. It was a pleasure chatting with you. As I understood, you are having questions in regards of Google Meet session made from @gmail.com to your G Suite account and generating an error. As stated the behavior should not be expected, but the unfortunate part is that we are not able to give more accurate information from @gmail.com, but only for the G Suite account. Has anyone got a private Gmail address they can send a meet request to their GAFE account and see if it works ?
timbo343 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 (edited) Already been discussed here by me https://www.edugeek.net/showthread.php?p=1841282 Gsuite users are able to join private Hangsouts Edited May 16, 2020 by timbo343
caffrey Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 Yes, this is where the confusion lies, hangouts works, meet doesn't https://hangouts.google.com/ works https://meet.google.com/ doesn't Too many products
timbo343 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 (edited) Yup. It's a safeguarding nightmare that not one video conference has taken into consideration and i've tested what feels like them all on the net. At basic level, schools need a webinar product not a video conference product. They are 2 different things. The issue is, the cost of the webinar products. Edited May 16, 2020 by timbo343
caffrey Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 It does all need merging into one with a specific education version , more confusion to follow with the update to the admin panel too Nice person at Google asked me to change a setting in my admin control panel and the setting was missing - they are still looking into my issue It's typical it's a governor , they don't want to use a school supplied account and want to use a personal email address. Normally I doubt there would be a need for a private gmail account to set up a meet with a Gsuite account I guess. meet.google.com is a new thing for private accounts
caffrey Posted May 20, 2020 Author Posted May 20, 2020 After a few days of working with Google I got this response :- I have presented the case to our dedicate team, who handles such cases, as presented by your side. As from their prescriptive, they have contacted the Product Engineering side and for extra security measure of the Google Education/Non-profit subscriptions, they are including the options to not allow to join external session by this moment. That is caused, due to the fact that Students under your Organization could join such session, and violate the G Suite Terms of services at any time. That is why this is implemented from there for a security and privacy measurement. I understand the inconvenience of the occurred situation has caused and I want to assure that it was previewed several times in regards of it. At the moment, the unfortunate part is that there is not an official documentation stating that it is applied for G Suite subscriptions that are having as stated Education/Non-profit. So you can't apparently join External Gmail meets from GAFE accounts
TwistedHelixis Posted May 20, 2020 Posted May 20, 2020 Is that specifically meet created through Gmail? I recently tested inviting my wife which worked fine. I was in educational g suite and she was in free, but I used the meet web page not Gmail.
caffrey Posted May 20, 2020 Author Posted May 20, 2020 Through gmail or meet.google.com, GAFE can create a meeting and private GMail can join but not the other way round
timbo343 Posted May 20, 2020 Posted May 20, 2020 (edited) I have just created a Meet via my work GSuite account. Copied the meet URL to my personal gmail account and managed to gain entry to the meeting. As as host (my work account) prompted me with a Admit / Deny entry message. I've just created a Meet on my personal gmail account, copied the URL to a test student account and it gave me the message - You are not allowed to join this video call. This was also true for hangouts. Edited May 20, 2020 by timbo343
caffrey Posted May 20, 2020 Author Posted May 20, 2020 Tried creating a meet using your personal GMail account and inviting your GAFE account ? I know it works from GAFE inviting personal GMail.

caffrey Posted May 21, 2020 Author Posted May 21, 2020 Thanks for that, confirms it then - it was just undocumented to the point where I went through 2 Google engineers that didn't even know I guess they need to sort out the admin panel to allow OU's to accept external meets instead of a blanket block Meanwhile the governors just ended up using Zoom.
paulkerton Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Meanwhile the governors just ended up using Zoom. I'm guessing your Governors don't have G Suite accounts in your school domain?
caffrey Posted May 21, 2020 Author Posted May 21, 2020 I'm guessing your Governors don't have G Suite accounts in your school domain? They do, but for some reason wanted to do a private one - they don't like using their School accounts.
Zagros Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Follow these steps to enable or disable the external invitation prompt: Sign in to your Google Admin console. Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com). From the Admin console Home page, go to Apps G Suite. Calendar. Go to Sharing Settings. ... Choose ON or OFF for the setting. 1
Zagros Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 In a G-suit meet Admin you should have a option to allow your domain members to join or not join the external meet invitation

caffrey Posted May 21, 2020 Author Posted May 21, 2020 (edited) In a G-suit meet Admin you should have a option to allow your domain members to join or not join the external meet invitation Is this recent ? As like I've mentioned Google said to me you can't because of issues, Edit just checked, there is no option like that, although Meet has now appeared in the list of apps instead of hangouts chat and google hangouts but I guess that's to do with the new changes on the 15th June Edited May 21, 2020 by caffrey
TIOAOA Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 It's typical it's a governor , they don't want to use a school supplied account and want to use a personal email address. I feel your pain, I'm dealing with the same thing here. I'm standing firm and insisting they use a school address and saying there are GDPR implications if they don't.
hellgate24 Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 Just been looking at this myself today, joining an external private gmail meet from a school managed Google account and getting the 'You are not allowed to join' message. External gmail account can join the meet setup by the school managed Google account though. Is the official line still that Google have blocked this due to privacy/terms of use concerns?
caffrey Posted June 4, 2020 Author Posted June 4, 2020 Seems that way, I can't find anything official on it but that's what Google support told me
hellgate24 Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 I'm in a queue to talk to them at the mo, we'll see if I get the same response.
hellgate24 Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 As aside, I've just tried joining a meeting hosted by a different school who also use GSuite and that works, so seems to just be non GSuite accounts.
hellgate24 Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 OK, so same response, when I asked about if it could just be enabled for staff/faculty they directed me to the feature ideas community... Based on the information I have been able to gather, the reason why users from a G Suite for Education account cannot join Meet created under a Gmail.com account is because of privacy and security reasons. This is inline with the legal policy followed by Classroom, which does not allow G Suite for Education users to join consumer (gmail.com) classes for abuse/policy reasons. Same applies to Google Meet. Accordingly to the update, it applies to both teachers and students, unfortunately.
