G Suite - Classroom and other apps.. Device policy management.. iPads.. Passcodes..

Well, we had GSuite set-up in a hurry as a knee-jerk reaction to needing some kind of distance learning platform due to the school closure.

Unfortunately with no knowledge of the depths of the settings needed it was set-up and used.

Then as the children from keyworkers still need access to G-Suite in school I was asked to set it up on the iPads.

With a little Googling help I managed to find out that they need to be installed as apps (Google Classroom/Sheets/Slides/Docs) and got this sorted through our Cisco Meraki MDM.

Now the iPads are asking "‘Device Policy Alert – Your Org requires you to set a passcode on this device to access the account. Please set a passcode and try again’

A little more Googling is telling me why....

"Mobile Management Info

Google has changed its Mobile Management/Device Policy to enforce a password on devices and keep our organization data safe. With this change, users have been seeing the Device Policy Alert message -

Device Policy Alert - Your org requires you to set a passcode on this device to access this account. Please set a passcode and try again."

But, GSuite help is making this seem like I can stop the apps from working properly if I change the settings....!

Another thing is that when I go into GSuite Admin I can see all my users personal devices (have I enforced some sort of policy on them?), but none of the school owned iPads?

I'm presuming I just need to untick the box "Require users to set a password" in Admin > Devices > Password Settings

But I honestly didn't realise GSuite came with any sort of mobile device management settings and I'd like to know what impact the default settings might have (or what turning it off might do)...?

Anybody?

From the little I have played around with GSuite with regards to device management I found no real issues with turning off their device management, especially if you are using another MDM. I found that initially it was asking our staff to install a device app that allowed IT to wipe their devices.... that didnt go down well! When I removed this management all the prompts etc went away and no one lost anything as far as I know. Good luck!

Should be under Settings > Device Management > Setup.
