Different behaviour in office 365 proplus for students accounts

This seems like a wierd one.

Have office 365 licenses for both staff and students to install office 365 proplus. Have a laptop with windows 10 pro and office 365 proplus installed from a student account.

when a member of staff logs in and goes to word - it automatically connexts to their onedrive in the open page

when a student logs in and goes to word it does not connect to their onedrive, going through add a place, onedrive for business, doesn't work either.

the students have the licenses: microsoft 365 apps for students, office 365 a1 plus for students, office 365 a1 for students.

the staff have the licenses: office 365 a1 plus for faculty, office 365 a1 for faculty, (microsoft power automate free)

I can't find any settings that might relate to this. It's a problem because the instructions for students are different and unnecessarily more complicated than the instructions for staff. Any ideas?

Have your tried assigning a student with a staff licence and seeing what happens? To confirm its a licence problem and not some other setting which remains pointed at the student account even after changing the licence.

When the student has "office 365 A1 plus for faculty" it starts working.

I take it you don't use salamander etc? We have ours set to pre-provision OneDrive for people to use automatically before they log in, but just wondering if you might have it only set for certain licenses etc?

If they manually try to access OneDrive via browser etc, does it still work for students without provisioning status?

We don't use salamander. The student I tried it on had onedrive provisioned in the browser with some files in.

That is odd. I think you might need to log a Microsoft support ticket for that one.

this is what happened.

After going through 3 support reps. By the time I got to the 3rd one after the weekend, I couldn't replicate the problem but he referred to the message centre (like it would be obvious) and said it would be working now. I couldn't find an item in message centre that sounded anything like it but the problem has gone away so I guess they've fixed it.
