OutLawTorn Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Having an issue with remote desktop on a windows xp machine... Recently reinstalled Windows on the machine, reconfigured remote desktop and it was all working fine. Then ~Tuesday 2 weeks ago it just stopped. I haven't made any changes to any of the settings. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) 7, however the settings have not been changed (tried disabling the program completely and still can't connect). The same KIS settings work on another PC in the house, and i can connect to it just fine. The router is forwarding ports properly, as if i change the detination IP i can connect to every other computer in the house... i can't connect to the PC from the internal network either... When i try to connect, it doesn't give any errors, it just starts to try and then goes back to the "enter computer name" type screen... Any ideas?
FN-GM Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Try connecting to the computer internaly using the IP address of the machine not the name.
ahuxham Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Try connecting to the computer internaly using the IP address of the machine not the name. Had the same problems a while back. Had to flush DNS cache and then tried again, eventually it worked. In the mean time I just used the servers IP address as stated above. BTW: Its; CMD>ipconfig /flushdns on both your machine and the servers for good measure
FN-GM Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Also check you DNS server settings on the network card & check on your DNS server that it has the right IP address assigned to your machine.
Michael Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I agree that it does appear to be a DNS issue with the one machine. If you can connect via IP then I would flushdns as already mentioned.
OutLawTorn Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 The router that forwards the ports uses the direct IP of the desktop.... and i can't connnect internally using the IP either....
Michael Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Start > Run > Regedit File > Connect Network Registry > Computername HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Terminal Server Change fDenyTSConnections to a value of 1, then repeat the process.
OutLawTorn Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 Remote desktop is definately enabled... i've even disabled it, restarted, and reenabled it to try and troubleshoot... When the registry setting is set to 1, it errors out and doesn't connect. When i change it back to 0 and reboot, it does the same thing as the original problem (tries to connect, and then just goes back to the main remote desktop screen with no errors)
Michael Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Does the computer in question have a static IP allocated or not? And if you're working locally at this problematic machine, can you Remote Desktop to another workstation or server within your LAN?
OutLawTorn Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 The problem PC has a static IP (and the router is set with it as reserved as a backup) I can remote out of it to the other PCs on the network, and from the other PCs to each other... this is the only one that doesn't work... and its a fairly clean install of XP Pro (probably 3-4 weeks)
Michael Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 It does appear to be a port issue, as XP's Firewall (for example) only filters incoming traffic and not outgoing. I have come across it once before (similar symptoms) even though the firewall was turned off. I came to the conclusion a component of Windows was damaged. If possible, I would try re-imaging this workstation and see how it goes.
