The new 90-minute special is the thirteenth outing of the legendary sci-fi comedy. It reunites the original cast of Chris Barrie (Rimmer), Craig Charles (Lister), Danny John-Jules (Cat) Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) and sees the return of Holly (Norman Lovett) the much loved ship’s computer. Written and directed by Doug Naylor, it was recorded in front of a live studio audience over two nights at the world famous Pinewood Studios.

 

Three million years ago… David Lister, a vending machine repairman, was sentenced to eighteen months in suspended animation for smuggling his pregnant cat aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf. While Lister remained in stasis, a radiation leak killed the rest of the crew. Safely sealed in the hold, the cats evolved into humanoid form. The cats now roam deep space in a fleet of their own...

 

The special will see the posse meet three cat clerics (Tom Bennett, Mandeep Dhillon, Lucy Pearman) who worship Lister as their God. Lister vows to help them as they’re being hunted by Rodon, the ruthless feral cat leader (Ray Fearon) who has vowed to wipe out all cats who worship anyone but him.

I know it wont be the same as the originals, but love red dwarf.

There's a few good quips in it for the fans but overall a lot of the jokes felt kind of recycled and fell a bit flat IMO. Some rather poor performances from the supporting cast in my opinion as well. Especially next to the original crew.

 

Worth a watch though if you're bored. Which you probably are given we're been stuck inside for getting in towards a month's quarantine now!

I’d agree with that. The geek bit at the beginning was good. The second half of the show was better than the first but it didn’t make me laugh out loud.

I'm one of the people that actually loved it. The only bit's that fell flat for me were the oversized floppy and the sex change joke that didn't go anywhere. Everything else felt really like "the good old days" even without rose tinted glasses - some of the more sombre moments felt like Marooned and Better than Life, character acting feeling very much like the series 3 to 6 heyday and little nods to Terrorform (remember Kryten's hand?), Quarantine and Back to Reality. Even the Boys from the Dwarf thing raised a smile

More importantly it felt like they enjoyed making it which comes across well, but they generally always do.

Glad to revisit the Cat story (see Series 2 episode Waiting for God & more to the point the book Infinity Welcomes Careful drivers) but would have loved to see the Cat himself see a little more screentime as a result..

I have fanboyed over this one somewhat so I do apologise a little!
