Setting up server - but out of school!

I’m in the process of setting up a new server install with one server & several virtual machines.

 

I was about to get to stage of thinking of introducing some client desktops to test group policies, image deployment etc.

 

But now the Coronavirus has thrown a complete spanner in the works for my plans. I may end up working from home in the near future.

 

Apart from taking the new server home, and also a number of desktop machines - is it simply a case of bringing home an unmanaged network switch to connect them all? At the mo I have it connected using static ips on our existing cabled network.

 

I could install remote software on the server and leave it in work but obviously the building images etc on desktops would be an issue!

Why not just use virtual machines for the client machines?

Agree with the above. Make it all virtual and then you can connect to the hardware remotely.

I was thinking of installing on machines themselves to help ensure the network image works perfectly on different hardware types.

 

But I definitely see your point - I honesty never thought about setting up a Windows 10 vm or several on the server to test.

Do the whole lot virtually, including building images. Have you considered powers requirements running all this at home? Are you taking user data off site?

No user data at present on new server - test network set up with sandbox testing accounts at present.

 

Will do it virtually same as my current network set up.

Does the server have iLO, iDRAC or other remote management from power-on through to OS (at which point your normal methods take over).

Keep it all in school and remote in. Use Win 10 VMs for test PCs. You're house insurance won't cover a work server - and your work insurance won't cover you taking it off premise, so it's a bit risky should anything go wrong.
