I have had very conflicting information. Can the eeePC (linux based, rather than pre-installed with Windows) run smart notebook?

Please let me know if you have managed this and how...I just want to know for certain if I can do this before I buy one!

Thanks

Ive installed Smart Notebook etc on Linux before, its quite easy, dont see any reason why it shouldn't work when connected to a board, youd have to enable the advanced mode though.

AFAIK there is no Linux driver from Smart (yet?). The only boards that I know definately have a Linux driver are the GTCO Calcomp Interwrite boards (my board of choice).

this is why Im getting confused - I know that you can run SMART on linux, but i *think* and am not at all sure, that the version of Linux that the eeepc runs isn't compatible...argh!

According to the Smart site, the Linux 9.7 version of Smart Notebook requires:

Pentium II 450 MHz processor

128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended)

225 MB of free hard disk space for minimum installation (800 MB for full installation with Gallery collections)

Linux kernel version 2.6 or later (2.6.11 or later to use a Sympodium DT770 interactive pen display)

X Window System version 11 release 6 (X11R6) or later (must support XRender, Xinerama, XFixes, Xau and Xdmcp)

glibc 2.3.3 (gcc 3.4.2)

libstdc++6

GNOME 2.8.0+ or KDE 3.3+ libraries (recommended)

SUSE 10, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 WS, Debian 3.1 (Sarge), Ubuntu 6.06 LTS or Fedora Core 3+

So I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

thanks for that localzuk, that's what I thought - but the people at SMART and ASUS aren't that confident...if SimpleSi or someone else could try it out first that would be fab, just so I know (i am looking at the 4g version).

Also, (probably a really thick question, but how do you install things as there isn't a CD drive?

Finally, will it be able to run on my schools network, for me to be able to access shared folders etc? I presume I can open up word files etc in just the same way as I will be able to save files as .doc. Am I right?

I'll give it a go on Tuesday if I can find the Smart software.

Yes you can access your network shares via username/password, and to install stuff you can either use a USB CDROM, or USB Stick etc or straight from a network shared cdrom drive etc.

Do a search on the previous threads - a lot of stuff is in *nix section as this section was just created last week :)

And check out the stuff in the wiki - It contains all the info on taking a eeePC from the box to saving/opening files to a network share.

It does work but you have to be gentle with them :)
