Interested in using hardware security keys to log into online services more securely? Well, now you can make your own from scratch, thanks to an open-source project that Google announced last week.

 

EDIT - Don't get excited just yet, it's in early stages and knowing Google, will probable get dumped at some point.

I'm surprised they don't just buy Fido and/or Yubikey.

I have used both for several years and they've been fine. With printed one-time codes and Google authenticator that covers all the possible problems. It would be great if more companies would adopt non-SMS MFA as there are many places that have flaky mobile signal as well as the insecurity of SMS

Probably more to get other people to adopt the standard easily, if they don't have to write their own, probably terrible, crypto code. See earlier when all hardware flash encryption turned out to be terrible
