Buried cable regulations

I'm hoping someone can advise on regulations for burying electrical cable.

 

I keep finding stuff that says if you use rigid metal conduit, it only needs to be 6 inches deep, but I have a feeling that's USA regulations.

 

I need to replace the electrical power supply to my garage. It used to be overhead and when I had problems with the supply in the house, I found that it was just taken as a spur of a normal socket and run with normal twin and earth! A few years swinging in the wind and - who knew - water gets in and shorts the whole house.

 

I'm going to have an electrician connect it up - it's a new circuit, so I know I'm not allowed to do it, but I am planning on putting conduit in the ground with a draw wire. Having dug a trench for utilities before, I know it's going to be hard work, so don't want to go deeper than I need to.

All our external cables (both above and below ground) are SWA at work. For some long runs they are in plastic conduit, but most are just buried.

 

Maybe check with the electrician your going to use as you need to make sure it's the right size for the circuit

Hoping to buy my way out of digging by installing conduit [emoji6]

 

SWA is supposed to be about 18" and about 24" under a flower bed. That's quite a lot of digging!
