junz Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Hi, We have currently got three Imacs with the end bit of am headphone broken the headphone port. The cost to resolve this issue will be £160.00 each. I would rather not pay this much so was wondering whether anyone has anyone come across this issue and if so how they went about resolving it.
3s-gtech Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Multiple times. Failed once and broke the port too. What usually works is to take the centre out of a biro. The inside of the tube is the same diameter as the stub left over of the broken jack. Put a blog of super glue inside the end of the biro, then press it down onto the jack stub. Leave it for an hour or so. Once dry, pull the tube back out from the port, and the jack stub should come out with it. Then throw away all of your cheap headphones so it can’t happen again. 1

Ooh, going to give this a try on a couple of portable amps we have with this issue - we've tried screwing a slender screw into the centre of the broken-off bit before, but results tend to be variable.

You’d be forced to replace the jack on the board, which I think is a daughter board on many iMacs but no guarantees there. As 3.5mm are so vulnerable, we bought external sound cards for all of our Macs (at a reasonable but significant cost) that have 6.5mm ports. No more cheapo headphones or even worse - headphone splitters.

From my experience it seems that when using an external sound card the Mac thinks that headphones are already plugged in (due to the headphone port being plugged with a broken headphone).

3s-gtech Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Yeah you just change the default sound device and it ignores the jammed port. This is even easier in software like GarageBand and Pro Tools. Our iMacs all have M-Audio USB cards, our Mac Minis have Roland Duo-Capture units.
