I never knew that it was him who had drawn the LOTR maps.

Not sure that rings true. I recently went to the JRRT exhibition in Oxford and seem to recall the his father did them very early on in the writing process. Maybe it was a re-draw job, but I'm not convinced!

Apparently JRR did draw some of the maps but it was Christopher who drew the final maps for publication.

Although his father created the 'world' and wrote the text - Christopher was the one who pulled the various ages and variations in concepts together to form something that could be published

Possibly the concept was so vast that it could never be done while its creator was alive

 

In the end he managed to get the Silmarilion together - not the easiest book to read but a level of brilliance in concept and depth that I have never seen equalled
