move services to the cloud or stay onsite

Hey All

 

I have been very unlucky with some hardware failure on my storage array this year especially last weekend when my direct storage array dropped 7 drives and a controller. yes I have data loss as well

 

So am looking for a new solution, now I have been speaking with dave@ictdirect allways amazing and the suggestion is to go for a server and use it with FreeNas put some 10gb network cards in and nice 10gb switch but my vms would need to be stored locally.

 

my second option is to move our finance /reg system to a dedicated server in the cloud (some how ) and keep our print server locally. We are currently getting users to move there data to OneDrive, then all that would be left is the DC and azure sync.

I’ve been doing this at several schools lately. We are moving print servers (Papercut) to Azure as well and have seen no noticeably performance issues.

I've been looking at similar things as I have some servers that need replacing and I'm thinking am I a dinosaur for wanting to keep everything onsite (with the exception of Office 365 emails)

 

I have 23 VMs running across 3 Hyper-V Hosts and all VMs are on central Storage server using SMB3 shares.

 

Yes I need to budget for things such replacement server costs, electric etc - but how does this cost compare to running things in the cloud?

 

For those people who have moved VMs to Azure and Data to OneDrive/SharePoint - how to you back things up?

 

Also.... what have you moved to cloud and what have you kept onsite?

I'm considering moving users H Drives & our staff shared drives to One Drive & SharePoint. However I want to get Cloud Drive mapper first to give an almost seamless experience. Staff are keen as it allows for better collaboration.

As for backup I've been told by SLT that we're not purchasing any additional solutions to backup any Office 365 data. So our backup is only what Microsoft provide.

 

However I'm not in a rush to move vm's to azure. Although our MIS(isams) is cloud hosted along with our VLE(Firefly). However this has been the case since we opened in 2012 or so. Our ESX hosts & SAN were new in August and aren't oversubscribed and bulging at the seams. Overall I'm not convinced that all cloud is a huge money saver, money just goes on subscriptions rather than hardware.

 

But we're moving to a completely new building in 2023 so things may change with the move, but I'll wait & see.
