I don't think this is one of DfE's most helpful documents. It starts by saying "The Department for Education (DfE) buys copyright licences for all state-funded primary and secondary schools in England – covering schools for almost all their copyright requirements" but then links you to nearly a dozen references to check if you are covered. Later on it quotes "You can also use the CLA’s Education Platform if your school is covered by the CLA Education Licence". Well, has what the DfE bought provided that or not?!

 

I recall in another thread discussion about having to report films watched every three months - PVSL reporting. You'd only discover that if you follow a link a long way down in the bullet list. @elsiegee40 has posted the following link before Copyright & Schools: photocopy, scan, screen or broadcast copyright resources in classrooms - simple advice for teachers - it's much easier to navigate and with a few clicks, I can see a school could legitimately show a DVD for educational purposes. What worries me is how accurate that site is though. For example, the site made no reference to the DVD coming from a PVSL participant studio to be covered by the license. Also, no mention of the requirement to report viewing - if indeed there is one - I''m still not sure, especially for showing a excerpt. I think there are many governing bodies and schools that would want to be compliant and educate teaching staff on how to not breach copyright. The issue I see is that it is so darn difficult to know what is compliant and what is not. I think the DfE could help more on that front and whilst this document is welcome it could be improved a lot. What I do especially like is the clear statement about Youtube. I will be raising this topic at my next Resources committee meeting. It's a local committee but it will be interesting to see if the parent trust body has a good awareness of copyright and can advise.

Whilst we try to collate films to report to PVSL it's not always easy to get the teachers to list what they are watching in lessons.

 

Despite numerous emails and reminders in staff meetings. Teachers don't do or I get the response 'I don't have to do it as the dvd is mine and not the schools'

 

Which is a whole different issue we have to deal with.
