couple of XP SP3 Issues i've come accross

1) the new UXTheme patcher doesn't rest the security permissions correctly on uxtheme.dll in the system32 dir. once patched reboot and then login as an admin and add to the security tab users and power users with read and execute rights. Symptom was an Explorer.exe crash on login.

 

2) the Printer spooler service crashes when you add a printer (on logon via my VBS script) found an issue with the Driver PCL5 and PCL6 for the HP 4000 and HP 4050 Laserjets.. so far only resolution use the Apr 08 Universal Printer Driver I’m using the PCL5 one.

That's odd i've got a room with a HP Laserjet 4000 in and i've put SP3 on a couple of PC's and not seen that issue. I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

Wierder than that - we have SP3 on 4 test machines - 1/4 of them wont load up the driver for the 4000, but the other will! (All same spec and hardware etc)

 

It is finding the time to take that closer look that is the problem :-)

in my enviroment i have rebuilt my base build using a XP With SP3 CD rather than deploy it. i will be deploying to other PCs in time but wanted to build a new image for our main labs for lots of other reasons.

Yes we're doing the same here but i've put it on a couple of PC's in each room to test accross different software and hardware. I still haven't had an issue with the HP 4000 printer though.

 

Our print server has the MS HP Laser driver installed 5.2.3790.0 so it's the one that comes with 2003 server.

we have arround 15 4600's, and we haven't had no problems with XP SP3. Saying that we have had no issues at all with XP SP3.

Just found a new issue that I hadn't noticed before now...

 

Seems SP3 may have borked my ability to change my printing preferences on any HP printers.

 

Only just noticed it today as I've been testing Canons for the last couple of months... Any attempt to change anything in preferences is just ignored completely... Tried deleting and reinstalling and same issue repeats...

 

Checking the eventlog showed this:

Failed to ugrade printer settings for printer \\[COMPUTER]\4. K5400dtn,2,LocalOnly driver C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\UNIDRVUI.DLL error 1801.

 

It may be a duff copy of the driver but it looks HP and Microsoft strike again...

 

 

EDIT: Hmm... on further investigation it may not be a specific issue to SP3 as it's cropped up before in SP2... Looks like it's all HP's fault... No shock there then... *mutters about cr*p driver software*

I have seen that problem with HP print drivers causing the spooler to crash with SP3 - its really annoying but has only affected a handful of machines. Ours were crashing on HP P2105n and 450x series drivers. The spooler would crash as soon as you tried to run the vbs script that we use to install printers.

 

In the end I had to switch to HPs universal driver to get it to work.

 

Apart from that I haven't seen any other issues with XP SP3

We have it on 1000 workstations and not seen anything. Maybe we are just lucky

Ok... update on the earlier issue... Turns out it may have been partly caused by SP3 but it's definitely a problem primarily revolving around the HP driver side of things.

 

I grabbed the Kyocera driver deleter util and removed ALL my orphan printer driver files and all HP drivers (including the OEM's for each), rebooted, reinstalled and now the preferences are playing nice again.

 

Could just have been something to do with permissions getting messed up by the SP or similar but the fix is there in case anyone else hits it.

Had all sorts of problems with print drivers, seems HP drivers are a nightmare

Only issue I've come across is that Sandisk Enterprise USB sticks stop working when upgrading from SP2 to SP3 unless you plug the thing in, log into it, and leave it in the USB slot while the upgrade process runs.
