Migrating shared areas to SharePoint / Teams / OneDrive

Recommended Posts

We are in the process of moving all our shared areas onto SharePoint / Teams. I am also looking at moving users home directory's to OneDrive.

Is anyone completely running from the cloud?

How did the migration go?

How do the users find it?

Do you use the web browser or sync SharePoint / OneDrive to the client?

Thanks in Advanced!

We are currently running both local storage and cloud with one department testing Teams/SharePoint/OneDrive sync. All our staff have OneDrive Files on Demand setup with autostart and sign in. Students have the same but currently it doesn't autostart (Although I plan to set it up soon).

As for shared areas, we're testing but currently we simply copied and pasted to a OneDrive synced folder. So we have a Team setup, which creates the SharePoint 'Files' area which you sync via the Windows 10 built in OneDrive client.

We're also testing Office 365 to try and avoid having to sync things but I think we'll still need to for other software to use it.

All users slowly moving over to OneDrive. Migrated all of our file server shares over to SharePoint Online using Microsoft’s migration tool, pretty good tool. Shares mapped using IAM Cloud’s Cloud drive Mapper.

We moved to OneDrive enmasse about a year ago and currently in the process of migrating our shared areas to Sharepoint. We have locked our old area and telling people to move only what they need across. This will last the academic year before the old are is closed off completely.

We have done a lot of communicating and presentations about it so I think we are in a good place. Biggest issue is people not thinking about where stuff is, so they say that Sharepoint has deleted there work but actually they saved it somewhere stupid. I am coming down hard and putting all resources into investigating these incidents as I have found one person claiming it spreads so other use it as an excuse or we just get people saying it doesn't work. So far no reports have been Sharepoint issues.

Migrated shared areas to the sharepoint part of teamsites, anticipating adoption of teams. Used the MS tool, I've used Sharegate in the past which is much more feature rich, but MS tool does the job. Used the ability to map teamsites in ondrive/ GPO. Only annoyance is the random amount of time it takes for the onedrive shared areas to appear. Went very smoothly, we are a small environment but didn't have one issue reported.

We are using SharePoint for all shared drives now and OneDrive for user home folders. Uploaded with the Microsoft migration tool. Was a bit of a pain the first few times but figured out what files it doesnt' like etc and now all good. We don't use any third party mapping tools just using OneDrive GPOs and a few scripts.

I second what TechMonkey said about users blaming the system - we have found loads of people complaining about missing files but they just don't remember where they have saved it and they tend to blame the system rather than the user.

Hi all, please excuse me for starting this old thread, But I thought you would’ve had experience using all Drive on the cloud. I just want to know if you experienced any issues with internet bandwidth as what are your bandwidths now you have everything on the cloud? Thanks in advance for your reply. At the moment we just went cloud as you all all and we are experiencing outlook freezing up and I don’t know if it’s because the amount of bandwidth that’s taken by the connections the cloud based drives That’s casing the emails to freeze for a lack of bandwidth? We’re using Office 365 Pro Plus on Windows 10 LTSC. Thanks in advance.

Unless you’re grossly undersized, I doubt bandwidth is an issue, the cloud side servers are slow!

Outlook locking up could be many things, the most obvious is outlook must be in cached mode, no matter how fast the connection.

Thanks. I’m thinking it could also be a compatibility issue; running O365 Pro Plus in a Windows LTSC but there is no way of checking

Thanks
