DalekSec Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Hi All, I'm looking at setting up a Papercut release station on a Raspberry pi, a lot smaller and cheaper than using a windows PC! I've been through the guide they made : https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/RaspberryPiReleaseStation But it doesn't work, on a reboot it does it's disk check and the goes to console login and stays on there. I've been through the setup again checking I've done everything right, i'm not a Linux master far from it! I tried setting it to auto login and then it just goes through to the console. At no point has it come up with the Print Release GUI. Anyone setup this before than could let me know where i'm going wrong? Cheers Dalek
bald_pig Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 looking at that, there's no config change that should affect that, unless there's something in a recent update that breaks it, try skipping step 8?

DalekSec Posted October 21, 2019 Author Posted October 21, 2019 Just did a fresh install and on step 5: 5. Insert the SD card into your Pi and power it up. It should (eventually) boot up into the release station display or display an error message that it cannot contact the PaperCut application server. I don't get either of these messages it's just on a loop of saying lost connection to X server and keeps going round and round, think this solution is a non-starter.

Are you still having problems? Wow i didn't expect that high level of response! I think it was a 'problem behind keyboard' error, i thought the Pi was a newer version than it is, it's a first gen one it turns out so guessing that's the issue? Annoyingly the other Pi we have is a gen 1 one aswell....

I haven't tried using the build script on a new version of Raspian, i'll give that a shot this afternoon.
alecthegeek Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Should work fine on the Pi 3-B. I would bother rebuilding the image. Could be hardware. Did you try a different card? Are you using a HDMI display or the Pi touch screen?

Are you using a HDMI display or the Pi touch screen? I've only tried on the one Pi and the 1 SD Card. I can try another card, the one i'm using is a 4GB one that came with the Pi as a kit, can't see a class on it. I've just found a 8GB Sandisk but it's a class 4 and i saw you recommend 10. I'm using a HDMi display as i don't have the touch screen.

alecthegeek Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 OK -- I managed to get myself some time and get it working The basic problem was that systemd setup has changed on the new versions of Raspian. I've just pushed a fix to the GitHub repo https://github.com/PaperCutSoftware/RaspberryPiReleaseStation/commit/efafc8cc4f239691d6af266b3555fad59d574ec8 I've tested it on a Pi4 and will be testing on a Pi3 in a couple of hours. I will then push a new image build to our website so that should be up by Monday. Cheers Alec 1

Cheers Alec Great response - nice to see - thanks not sure it will help him (her???) on a pi 1 b (or B+ or B star or whatever) but stil great to document

It was a lot quicker than I thought. https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/RaspberryPiReleaseStation NOTE: You know need an 8Gb SD card -- that's because I am now using a Windows Workstation instead of a Mac. Anyone know how to reduce image size on Windows? Any Model B that runs Raspian Buster should work. If you have problems on the Model B let me know (as long as plain Buster runs) I don't think the Model A or Pi Zero have enough I/O to work as a release station so your mileage may vary.
