What's our SMTP server?? Exchange Hybrid

Hi all, I inherited a slightly overly complex on premises Exchange Server running in Hybrid with Office 365. Our ISP is LGFL.

 

We had a request from a third party (Abyasa) for an SMTP server for their app to send mail. I gave them the webmail address and ports and account details (newly created account) for our exchange but it did'nt work.

 

Looking further into it, it seems our exchange server only allows inbound mail from office 365 and mx.lgfl.org I think. They offered an SMTP relay for Abyasa.

 

Should I be offering a relay to Abyasa rather than opening up ports on our Exchange server? Or can I give them office 365's smtp address?

We use O365 SMTP details for things like that. We have created a noreply email account that can be used if it needs user details.

I created an account for them on the Exch which shows on 365 admin, but to do a no reply, is it best to create it another way? Sorry, bit new to this particular thing.

That's Ok. It is literally an account called [email protected]. We made it a shared mailbox, so as not to use a license. Potentially you could create a mailbox per service to prevent confusion but we've just gone with one. We also setup a automatic reply to let anyone who emails it by accident that it is a non-monitored account.

Ok so if I go into office 365 admin I can see the mailbox. The third party have tried using smtp.office365.com but their app shows mailbox cannot be accessed

will be the relay address - make sure you are using TLS and port 25

Sorry where do I get the domain name from. Is it from office 365?

In 0365 admin goto Setup > Domains

It will be the default domain and should be the end of your email address

e.g. if your domain is company.com then the SMTP address will be

company-com.mail.eo.outlook.com

I may be doing it wrong as I always use smtp.office365.com, port 587 and make sure to use the noreply username and password

It would be worth checking Microsoft's documentation here:

@TechMonkey is using Option 1. The approach by @PlantHead is Option 2/3.

Note that for Option 3, most Tenancies need to use *domain*.mail.protection.outlook.com now instead of *domain*.mail.eo.outlook.com.

It'll be whatever Office 365 tells you the MX record for your domain should be.

If the app is installed on a device inside your school and just needs to send some mail, LGfL have a mail relay server that you can send emails via. I use it for Redstor alerts. Give the help desk a call and they'll give you the details.

If its internal then you just need to throw up an IIS server and use that for your internal SMTP solution, put in a transport rule on your E365 config to accept mail. If its from a partner and its a cloudy based solution then the docs posted above will steer you right just bear in mind the rate limits for mail submission in to O 365.
