Apple classroom with Airwatch MDM issues

Hi All,

 

We've just delved into some student shared iPads for the first time and i'm having great difficulty getting Apple Classroom app to start. We are using Airwatch as our MDM.

 

So far:

Classes, student and instructors are setup on Apple Schools Manager

Airwatch is set to read the above information from ASM

A "cart" with students and instructors has been assigned in Airwatch

Education features are enabled on Airwatch

Shared iPad profiles are deployed

 

The shared ipad side of things appears to work fine as we can see the class names on the login screen however when opening the Apple Classrooms app once logged in the message "Classroom must be configured with a valid education configuration profile" appears and the app won't load any more

 

Any Ideas?

Apple Classroom app is only for teachers to manage student devices. It's not for students to use? Is the issue on the student iPads? Do the staff have their own iPad or are they using a shared iPad too?

Correct, the app is not for students. Staff can be using either their own staff issued iPad or one of the shared student iPads, whichever is easier to configure.

 

I have tried both, the above situation is staff using a shared device. On their own staff issued iPad the Classroom app starts but is not pre-loaded with any of the class data.

Okay, I don't think staff are able to use a shared iPad with Apple Classroom. They will need their own one assigning to them. The iPad needs to be assigned to the teacher that has been assigned to teach that class.

 

In ASM, the teacher needs to be assigned to the classes. In Airwatch, the iPad needs to be assigned to the member of staff. This will then generate a edu profile for the teacher.

One more issue is it appears you can only assign one ASM student to a device in AW. For staff this is fine because its 1-to-1 but ideally in a shared situation i'd like it so a student can pick up any iPad and Apple Classroom will recognise that. Not just the one they are assigned in Airwatch?

Hmm, the shared device shouldn't need assigning to a student in Airwatch. It's only the staff ones that need assigning. If a student signs into a shared device then a teacher of that classes should be able to manage it. Are you using true shared mode where the students tap on their name/picure?

I think you are spot on - I assumed students and instructors had to be owners of devices. I tested on two last week with just the instructor as the device owner and it seemed to work, so tomorrow ill try on a set of 20 and see how that goes.
