Is there any way to turn off this new word format? It's causing a lot of confusion as documents which need to open in Docs and be shared documents are now opening as Word and don't share correctly.

It's when you get a little DOCX logo at the top, the teachers are complaining that sharing the document doesn't work correctly, but to be honest, I've just tested it and it seems ok to me so I'm going to have to try and see exactly what they were doing.docx.PNG

So someone adds a .docx file to Google Backup and Sync, or Team drives. And then people using that same software on Windows default to opening that extension in MSWord which is installed on their computer?

What happened before the change?

The best way around this is with staff education and training. I have done a lot of work at my MAT with our staff to deter them from using Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint for this very reason to avoid confusion when working with files on Google Drive. Using the native editing of Microsoft Office files in Google Drive will reduce some of the sharing functionality in Google Docs. You will need to train the teachers on how to save the files as Google Docs files to unlock the full range of sharing and collaboration features.

Frustratingly, we have done quite a lot of training over the last few years, and our staff are very good with Google Docs, but this change has thrown them a little.
